Walking Contradiction Drawings

Here are some drawings I dug up that I had done on spec for the Green Day in 1996 or so. They were for a single release for the song, Walking Contradiction, from their album, Insomnia. You may not recognize them because they were not used. The drawings were met with silence and so I assume that they were not really what the band was looking for at the time. Nonetheless, I've always been fond of them, especially the bird with the tweeting naked man on his shoulder. These are from a period where I was preoccupied with classic Hanna Barbara cartoon character design (I still am).

Lookout Records 1999 Winter Catalog Cover

This is something I uncovered while digging through some old Lookout-related art archive CD-Rs. It's a drawing I did that I'd originally imagined being used for The Mr. T Experience - maybe a 7" cover or t-shirt. Ultimately, it was a little too specific and didn't correlate to anything MTX was doing at the time so instead it became the cover art for the 1999 / 2000 Lookout Records printed catalog.

"Cosmic Boat" Drawings

This is a drawing I did for a comic project I am working on. It's a one-panel page and the comic will be called something like "Space Boat" or "Cosmic Ship." I've also included two pencil sketches of the same image to show what my illustration process is.

More Drawings / Artings

Here is the final Adam and Eve image; created for my friends Billy & Dolly's new album, In The Beginning. See the post below for some earlier versions of the artwork.
And while I'm at it, here's a Halloween-themed birthday drawing for Desmond (his birthday is at the end of October).

Adam & Eve Drawing

Here is a drawing I did that was intended for my friends' album cover. Earlier, I had drafted out some different concepts and while they ultimately decided they would go with one of those, I liked this one and decided to see it through for my own amusement. It can be hard to leave what you believe might be a good idea unfinished. It can also be ridiculously easy too...

Below are some of my earlier passes / versions of this image. I plan at some point to post a finished piece and include all of the mistakes, dead-ends, failed attempts and sketches that helped me get there - usually each project results in quite a pile of "notes."

Drawing

Here is a drawing I did as sort of a test for a comic project I am still formulating. It's a depiction of a man stranded on a strange planet - hence the spacesuit - coming across something buried under the ground. I did some quick greyscale shading in Photoshop to see if it made the image more dynamic but I've decided the next pass will take be from a more dramatic vantage point.

Frank Portman "Andromeda Klein" Flier

Here is a flier I did for my the book release party for my friend Frank's new novel, "Andromeda Klein." Frank is singer / guitar-er / songwriter for The Mr T Experience and wrote the book, "King Dork."

Punk Planet Magazine Back Cover Advertisement

This is a full page print ad I made for Punk Planet in 1998. I don't recall what the drawing is supposed to mean or how it exactly relates to the quote by Louis Armstrong. This was an attempt of mine to create a style of ads for Lookout that were unique - illustrating a quote from someone notable in what I hoped would be a fresh or funny approach. Another Punk Planet ad I did can be found here and here are some paintings that were done for this ad series. I'll work on tracking down the actual finished designs and posting them soon.

Digital Album Art

Two digital-only Lookout Records releases, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists "Sharkbite Sessions," and "Lookout Class of '04" both from 2005. I am responsible for the designs but not the illustrations.

Lookout Records Advertisements from '05

As one might be able to tell, I have unearthed an old Lookout Records art CD-r archive and am posting a few things that seemed to make sense here. First is a web ad for Mary Timony's "Ex Hex" album, a general Lookout Records ad and an ad for The Donnas' Lookout albums, all from 2005.

The Mr T Experience "Yesterday Rules" Album Cover

Here is the cover art for the Mr. T Experience's 2004 album, "Yesterday Rules."

Various Old Donnas Art

These are a few designs I created for The Donnas between their last Lookout Records release "Turn 21" and their Atlantic Records debut "Spend The Night." The first (unfinished) image was for a website for their fanclub, Donnaholix. The second also unfinished image is a version of a mini-mart clerk that would have been used elsewhere on the site. The third image is was a hot dog Donnas logo that was used for a one inch badge. I did a bunch of Donnas' art and album design when they were on Lookout (1998 - 2003) and will post some album and merchandise soon.

Jessica Birthday Drawing

Here is a sort of drawing I did with faked-out Photoshop watercolors for Jessica's birthday.

Watercolor for Sean

This is a watercolor cartoon portrait I painted of my friend Sean, riding on a turtle. He plays bass in our band, Off Campus, hence the bass he's holding.

Treasure Island Music Festival Apparel Designs

I created these t-shirt, hoodie and tote bag designs for the 2008 Treasure Island Music Festival. They are based on elements from Jason Munn's (The Small Stakes) original poster art for the inaugural 2007 Treasure Island Music Festival and Shepard Fairey's (Obey / Giant) design for the 2008 version.
